My name is Sarah Bennett and I am the owner of MayCrafts. I make a range of gifts from personalised patchwork quilts to doorstop owls and craft kits.
My background is in translation but I moved from crafting words to crafting fabrics as my family life has changed. Having covered all the beds, sofas and chairs in my Guildford home with my designs, I began making similar items for family and friends and for local church fairs. Then in 2012, I took the step of branching out further and set up May Crafts making special personalised and handmade items.
It can be hectic! But my family are always on hand to help and I love working with fabric and creating special pieces for people's homes. I have a strong Christian faith and feel blessed to enjoy my work and to share the gift of creativity. We always make time to sit down and eat as a family and the children are good at stepping around fabric and "Mum's next project!"
Happily my children and extended family are happy to be 'seasonal workers' during peak times such as Christmas - stuffing owls, printing labels, assembling craft kits and making cups of tea.
On-line craft blogs, books, exhibitions and most importantly my customers - I always listen to my customers. Many's the time they have asked me to make something which I wouldn't have thought of and I will give it a go.
My favourite part is seeing the finished product and finally getting feedback from my customers. If they love it, I'm happy! The challenging part is trying to get more exposure, but they say that the best business is repeat business, which I have, so I am happy to be able to say that I have satisfied customers.
Personalised quilts are my most popular product. Customers buy them knowing they are getting a unique item that they can't get on the high street and that will last for many years. I'm also excited to have introduced sewing kits recently, which is a great way for the younger generation to get creative.
Growing the business to include more product lines and maybe working with someone who shares my passion for all things fabric.
